Message from our CEO 05.11.20
We hope all of our communities are safe and well.
The links and resources under may help speakers of other languages, and we're here for you if you need us.
We recognise the particular difficulties faced by migrant communities just now, having noted an increase in calls for welfare support of all kinds. Migrants are more likely to hold zero-hours contracts and be engaged in low-paid work, both of which have led to financial difficulties. Those working in sectors such as food and food processing and e-commerce delivery, which depend on migrant labour, may have escaped these difficulties, but other issues remain. Isolation and mental health difficulties are fuelled by being away from family and perhaps lacking the language skills required to navigate the ever-changing rules we are living under or benefit from mainstream support services. We are working to foster stronger links with out friends in the voluntary sector to overcome this.
Since the start of the pandemic, our staff have worked hard to continue to provide our usual services. As we enter 'lockdown' #2 in November, our team is:
- offering welfare and EUSS help by phone, email and on social media
- providing online English courses
- working in Somerset's schools and early years settings with children with English as a second language
- providing welfare support and signposting by phone, messaging and email
Our help is available in any language. Stay kind, and stay connected.
